National Bio and Agro-Defense
Facility (NBAF); Notice of request
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is exploring potential sites for a proposed new national research and development (R&D) asset, the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF), which is in the planning phase. The proposed facility size is approximately 500,000 ft2 and its site will require a minimum of 30 acres. DHS is requesting Expressions of Interest from Federal agencies, State and Local governments, industry, academia, interested parties and organizations for potential locations that would accommodate the construction and operation of the NBAF. |
| The Journal Emerging
Infectious Diseases reports in its january 2006 edition a case
of ocular vaccinia infection in an unvaccinated laboratory worker. The patient was infected by a unique strain used in an experiment performed partly outside a biosafety cabinet. The CDC says that vaccination should continue to be recommended, but laboratories with unvaccinated workers should also implement more stringent biosafety practices. |

publishes report on infections caused by ESBL-producing E.
coli
The Health Protection Agency has launched its first report looking at the increasing problem of infections caused by multi-drug resistant ESBL-producing E. coli bacteria in England. |

Guidance on regulations for the transport of infectious substances
The guidelines provide practical guidance to facilitate compliance
with current international regulations for the transport of
infectious substances and patient specimens by all modes of
transport, both nationally and internationally, and include
the changes that apply from 1 January 2005.

The second Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (COP-MOP) took place in Montreal from 30 May to 3 June 2005. During the opening plenary session the president reported that 34 countries ratified since COP-MOP/1 bringing the number of Parties to the Protocol to 119.
